Phases

Transitioning back into the community is difficult. The Gate House treatment program helps clients through a three-phase program.

Our History

In 1972, Lancaster County ‘s first halfway house opened its doors to 12 men seeking assistance in recovering from alcoholism. It was given the name The Gate House, in remembrance of the monumental secret meeting place of Alcoholics Anonymous founding fathers, Bill W. and Dr. Bob. The Gate House was located at 649 East Main Street in the beautiful community of Lititz, Pa. The initial life of the program was short-lived, closing its doors in 1977. Lancaster County took over the property shortly after its initial closing.

Six years later, a group of individuals in the county filed the Articles of Incorporation for “Halfway Environment for Alcoholics Recovering, Inc.”, also known as, H.E.A.R., Inc. This group was formed with the intentions of proposing that The Gate House to be reopened. By March 1979 the voices of H.E.A.R., Inc. were heard and the County of Lancaster agreed to lease them The Gate House for $1.00 per year.

The decade of 1980 was a time of great accomplishment for The Gate House. 1980 marked a full-scale effort to renovate the third floor and increase the bed capacity to 18. Many volunteer hours and donated materials went into the effort. The effort was celebrated on July 8, 1981, when the third floor was opened for occupancy. In 1984, the hard work and dedication paid off when H.E.A.R., Inc. officially purchased the building from the County of Lancaster.

After approximately nine years of hope, encouragement, and quality care to male clients; the H.E.A.R., Inc. Board of Directors began to consider the feasibility of opening a program for women. A $100,000 donation made the purchase possible. The Gate House for women was opened in April 1989 at its to-date address of 465 West Main Street in Mountville, PA.

Since its original opening, The Gate House has upheld an important tradition in placing the highest priority on the needs of our clients. This has made The Gate House a model community based treatment program throughout the Tri State area. The Gate House has been providing chemically addicted persons with potential for the future for over thirty-five years. The Gate House continues to strive in maintaining this tradition and being available to people in need of assistance in recovering from chemical dependency.
